College Football is Whacky

What an incredible weekend in college football, the good, the bad and the ugly were all noticeable attendants to the Week 6 schedule of games this past weekend.  The season is still relatively a teenager, a pimply-faced, hormonaly unstable youngster, just beginning to figure out who it is and what it will be.   But, already we’ve seen player suspensions, a high-profile coach retiring mid-season, another high-profile coach get suspended…then 24-hours later get FIRED.  We’ve seen the best running back in college football since Adrian Peterson dismantle EVERY defense thrown at him, and we’ve even seen Charlie Strong crowd-surf in Texas:

Top stories form this weekend

  • Steve Spurrier retired?  PROBABLY the greatest head coach in University of South Carolina AND University of Florida football history retired after the 6th game of the 2015 season?  Incredibly strange timing and despite the way it ended, Spurrier’s career numbers are borderline retarded insane: 228-89-2 record in 25 seasons with one national title and six SEC championships. He is the all-time wins leader at both Florida and South Carolina. (Bear Bryant is the only other coach to lead two SEC schools in wins…Spurrier’s 131 SEC victories trail only Bryant’s 159).

  • USC head coach, Steve Sarkisian was suspended and then fired within 24 hours.  Apparently Coach Sarkisian’s drinking was a bit more of a problem then just your every-day drunk football uncle yelling at the TV on Saturdays and Sundays.

  • Florida Gators’ QB, Will Grier has been suspended for 1 year for PED use.  Grier tested positive for an illegal substance he claims was from an over-the-counter supplement (heard that before).  He will appeal the automatic one-year suspension this week, but unless his wiz-test from his PO was handled badly (Ryan Braun), then I think he’s dunzo for the year.  Sorry Gators fans, and just when things were really looking up for ya too.  The 8th ranked Gators will travel to LSU next week.
  • LSU’s star running back and Heisman guaranteed winner front-runner, Leonard Fournette is a beast on the field in a fashion that we haven’t seen since Adrian Peterson was at Oklahoma (Fournette has over 1,000 yds rushing & 12 TDs in 6 games).

In addition to dropping 158 yds rushing including a 87-yard TD against South Carolina, he also put the NCAA in a corner when he said in a post-game interview that he would auction off his game-jersey and the benefits would go towards the victims of the flood in South Carolina.

The NCAA, for once, actually let common sense rule their decision and decided to let this happen even though technically by their rules, no player can use their name or their school’s name to make money individually…..even if it is donated.  Kudos to the NCAA for not being complete assholes for once.

  • Charlie Strong has made the Texas Longhorn football team relevant again, despite the firing of the school’s Athletic Director earlier this season and several sub-par seasons previous to 2015.  The Longhorns program is a tough gig to say the least, TONS of expectation, TONS of money (with mouths and opinions attached) and yet they’ve been second-fiddle in their own state the last 5-ish years behind TCU, Texas A&M and Baylor….these are not your grandpa’s Texas Longhorns.  But Charlie Strong doesn’t care, he’s gonna keep working, and it’s starting to pay off.  The Longhorns are only 2-4 overall, but are coming off a HUGE game-changing win against #10 ranked Oklahoma, basically saving Strong’s job and the possibly remainder of the season.

  • The Michigan Wolverines are rallying behind head coach and Walmart khakis-wearing football angry-coach, Jim Harbaugh.  The Wolverines are currently ranked #12 in the AP poll, but seem to be ready to pounce and break through the top ten at any moment.  They’ve got #7 ranked Michigan State at home in the BIG HOUSE next week, get your popcorn ready….I think they give it to you for free at Walmart when you purchase anything from the “Harbaugh Sideline Casual – Khaki Collection”.
  • Baylor Bears football has their highest ranking EVER in the history of the program at #2 behind Ohio State.  And even more surprising is the Utah Utes highest ranking since finishing #2 in 2008 (can you name one player on that team?) currently ranked at #4.  If the NCAA football playoff started now, we’d have Ohio State, Baylor, TCU and Utah playing for the trophy….wait, does that mean….no SEC teams???  Currently there are no SEC teams in the top 5 at all, but there are 5 total in the Top 25.  I can’t remember the last time there wasn’t a SEC team in the Top 5 rankings.  I’ll have to get my CoLA stat team on that asap.
